RESUMO

The aim of the paper was to verify the possibility of using intermittent aeration to decrease outflow total nitrogen concentrations in municipal WWTPs of different capacities (15,780, 23,000 and 806,250 PE). A simple time-based intermittent aeration control was used in the experimental work. The results of WWTPs are compared with each other and with literature sources. The use of intermittent aeration led to a significant decrease of outflow total nitrogen concentration by up to 57% without the need of additional investment costs or the increase of operating costs. Nitrification kinetic tests and fluorescence in-situ hybridization observations proved that intermittent aeration has no negative impact on nitrifiers. The results proved that it is possible to utilize intermittent aeration for treatment plants initially designed with permanent aeration of nitrification sections if the current load is lower than the designed capacity. A necessary prerequisite for successful implementation of intermittent aeration is sufficient blower power. Although the time-based control is very simple and inexpensive to implement, the results are comparable to more complex systems such as systems based on rule-based systems for N-NH4+ and N-NO3- concentrations, on fuzzy logic or on mathematical models.

RESUMO

This paper describes the commissioning of the new water line (NWL) of the Central wastewater treatment plant in Prague and also the gradual reduction of the existing water line (EWL) loading. Concerning the NWL, the gradual start-up of the process without inoculation will be described. As to the EWL, the presentation describes the adaptation of the EWL operation to the relatively quick reduction of loading to approximately 35%.

RESUMO

The reconstruction of complex craniofacial and orbital defects should satisfactorily restore functional and aesthetic integrity. Autologous reconstruction of nasal, periorbital and auricular facial subunits as a whole using a locoregional or a free flap is very challenging and the results are not sometimes ideal. With advanced technologies that are currently available it is possible to plan and produce authentic facial prosthesis that can satisfactory substitute these facial subunits. We demonstrate an alternative reconstructive concept for complex craniofacial defects based on a free flap combined with a facial prosthesis for the replacement of periorbital or auricular facial subunits. This approach was used in two patients with very satisfactory results. Combination of a free flap with a facial prosthesis may become a preferable approach for the reconstruction of complex craniofacial defects. Clinical outcomes of the reconstructions may be enhanced respecting the principle of aesthetic facial subunits.

RESUMO

Infants as young as 12 months readily modulate their behavior toward novel, ambiguous objects based on emotional responses that others display. Such social-referencing skill offers powerful benefits to infants' knowledge acquisition, but the magnitude of these benefits depends on whether they appreciate the referential quality of others' emotional messages, and are skilled at using cues to reference (e.g., gaze direction, body posture) to guide their interpretation of such messages. Two studies demonstrated referential understanding in 12- and 18-month-olds' responses to another's emotional outburst. Infants relied on the presence versus absence of referential cues to determine whether an emotional message should be linked with a salient, novel object in the first study (N = 48), and they actively consulted referential cues to disambiguate the intended target of an affective display in the second study (N = 32). These findings provide the first experimental evidence of such sophisticated referential abilities in 12-month-olds, as well as the first evidence that infant social referencing at any age actually trades on referential understanding.

RESUMO

The role of visual information and the precise nature of the representations used in the control of prehension movements has frequently been studied by having subjects reach for target objects in the absence of visual information. Such manipulations have often been described as preventing visual feedback; however, they also impose a working memory load not found in prehension movements with normal vision. In this study we examined the relationship between working memory and visuospatial attention using a prehension task. In this study six healthy, right-handed adult subjects reached for a wooden block under conditions of normal vision, or else with their eyes closed having first observed the placement of the target. Furthermore, the role of visuospatial attention was examined by studying the effect, on transport and grasp kinematics, of placing task-irrelevant "flanker" objects (a wooden cylinder) within the visual field on a proportion of trials. Our results clearly demonstrated that the position of flankers produced clear interference effects on both transport and grasp kinematics. Furthermore, interference effects were significantly greater when subjects reached to the remembered location of the target (i.e., with eyes closed). The finding that the position of flanker objects influences both transport and grasp components of the prehension movement is taken as support for the view that these components may not be independently computed and that subjects may prepare a coordinated movement in which both transport and grasp are specifically adapted to the task in hand. The finding that flanker effects occur primarily when reaching to the remembered location of the target object is interpreted as supporting the view that attentional processes do not work efficiently on working memory representations.
